Patagonia is the world's most admired purpose-driven apparel brand, founded by climber Yvon Chouinard in Ventura, California in 1973. Known for technical outdoor clothing and climbing gear, Patagonia is equally famous for its environmental activism: 1% for the Planet (which it co-founded), the "Don't Buy This Jacket" anti-consumption campaign, the Worn Wear repair-and-resale programme, and Chouinard's landmark 2022 decision to transfer ownership of the company to a trust and non-profit so that all profits fund climate action — "Earth is now our only shareholder."
