The University of Mysore, established in 1916 under the patronage of Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and the Divan Sir M. Visvesvaraya, is one of India's oldest universities and the first university in Karnataka. Set in the royal city of Mysuru, the university's main campus Manasagangothri (established 1948) is a picturesque 761-acre spread with heritage buildings, tree-lined avenues, and research institutes. The University of Mysore is a comprehensive affiliating and teaching university with over 300 affiliated colleges covering Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Mandya, and Hassan districts. The university offers programmes across 300+ departments in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Education, Engineering, Medical, Fine Arts, and Music. The Department of Studies in Music is one of India's leading centres for Carnatic classical music education, tracing its heritage to Mysore's position as a cradle of Carnatic music. The Department of Kannada Studies is a nationally recognised centre for Kannada literature and linguistics. NAAC A+ accreditation. Notable alumni include B.R. Ambedkar (who did his early education influenced by Mysore), multiple IAS officers, scientists, and cultural figures. The Mysore Dasara festival, in which the university plays an active cultural role, is a defining event for the institution.
