About
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, established in 1959, is where computer science education in India began — the first institution in the country to offer computer science courses, on an IBM 1620 installed in 1963 under the Kanpur Indo-American Programme with nine top US universities. Ranked #4 in Engineering by NIRF 2024, IIT Kanpur's 1,055-acre campus houses ~9,000 students across B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, MSc, and PhD programmes. Its aerospace engineering department operates India's only academic flight-test airfield; its incubator (SIIC) has nurtured 300+ startups including several unicorn founders' first ventures. Techkriti (technical fest) and Antaragni (cultural fest) are among India's largest student festivals, and IIT Kanpur alumni — from N.R. Narayana Murthy's co-founders to leading Silicon Valley executives and dozens of Padma awardees — form one of Indian engineering's most influential networks.
