Neeraj Chopra is India's greatest athletics champion — the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in a track-and-field event, at Tokyo 2020, and the first Indian to win gold at the World Athletics Championships (Budapest 2023). Born in Khandra, Panipat, Haryana in 1997, he began javelin training at a Panchkula sports academy at age 12. His Olympic-gold-winning throw of 87.58 m in Tokyo made him an overnight national hero, and he added silver at Paris 2024, taking his career to two Olympic medals in the event. He remains a mainstay of the international Diamond League circuit and is one of India's most-loved athletes and endorsement figures. He is a subedar in the Indian Army and received the Padma Shri (2022) and the Khel Ratna.
