India's Premier Research University — Pioneering Science Since 1909
About
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru stands as India's foremost institution for advanced scientific research and higher education. Founded in 1909 with the vision of Jamsetji Tata and the patronage of the Maharaja of Mysore, IISc has been the bedrock of India's scientific progress for over a century. Ranked #1 in India by NIRF in the Research and University categories and accredited NAAC A++, IISc occupies a sprawling 400-acre campus in the heart of Bengaluru. The institute offers a unique 4-year BS Research programme — one of the most rigorous undergraduate science curricula in the country — along with ME, MTech, MSc, and PhD programmes across engineering, sciences, and interdisciplinary fields. With over 50 departments and centres, IISc hosts more than 3,800 students and 500 faculty members who collectively publish thousands of research papers annually. PhD scholars receive a monthly fellowship of ₹25,000, making research financially accessible. The annual cultural festival Pravega brings together students from across India, celebrating science, art, and culture. Facilities include world-class laboratories, a botanical garden, a supercomputing centre, an on-campus hospital, and extensive sports infrastructure.
