UPES University, established in 2003 under the UPES Act of the Uttarakhand Legislature, is a premier private university headquartered in the foothills of the Himalayas in Dehradun. Conceived with a mandate to create industry-ready professionals for the energy sector, the university has since evolved into a multi-disciplinary powerhouse spanning Energy, Technology, Law, Design, Business and Health Sciences. UPES holds a NAAC A grade and has consistently featured in the top 100 of the NIRF rankings in the engineering category. The university maintains deep-rooted industry partnerships with over 500 organisations including ONGC, Schlumberger, Deloitte, Amazon and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, resulting in one of the highest placement rates among private universities in northern India. Its sprawling 42-acre campus in Bidholi is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories including a dedicated Petroleum Engineering lab, a cyber-security research centre, a design studio, a moot court complex for its law school, and innovation hubs that encourage student entrepreneurship. UPES was among the first universities in India to launch specialised programmes in Upstream Petroleum Engineering, Energy Trading and Energy Law, reflecting its niche positioning in the energy domain. The School of Design at UPES has carved a reputation for nurturing creative talent with interdisciplinary projects linking design thinking to real-world industrial challenges. The law school, recognised by the Bar Council of India, has produced graduates who have gone on to leading positions in energy law firms, corporate legal teams and the judiciary. With a student body of over 14,000 learners from 25-plus states and several international countries, UPES fosters a cosmopolitan campus culture underpinned by rigorous academics, research productivity and community engagement. Ongoing research projects span renewable energy systems, smart grid technology, petroleum reservoir simulation and sustainable urban design.
